A LEGENDARY LAND SHARK AT NAHBS 2008

It would be easy to overlook the unassuming red-and-white lugged steel Huffy that sat in the Land Shark booth at this year's Handmade Bike Show. But anyone well versed in cycling history will recognize this bike's relevance. First of all...it's not really a Huffy. And beneath the Team 7-Eleven paint scheme lies the craftsmanship of Land Shark founder John Slawta.

This bike was built for Andy Hamsten, who rode it to victory in the 1988 Giro d'Italia. Hampsten is the first and only American to win the Giro, and his landmark victory is also the first major European stage race victory for an American team. Huffy was the official team bike sponsor and contracted another builder for their team frames, but when the team had problems with those, Hampsten and several other riders sought out other framebuilders and had them painted to look like the team gear.

Hampsten's victory was clinched in an epic stage over the Gavia pass in near blizzard conditions, and in the In the March/April issue of Road Bike Action featuring the bikes of Team 7-Eleven, Hampsten lists his "John Slawta built 'Huffy'" as one of the most notable race bikes of his career. "I bought it just before the race and it was like a horse finding the barn in the snowstorm on the Gavia," Hampsten said.
